Frequently asked questions

Your frequent questions

  • What keeps spirulina from being perceived as a food is its price, which is too high. By comparison, 100 g of ground beef costs less than €3, while it is difficult to buy 100 g of spirulina for under €12. Professor Gilles Planchon's production system could help reduce its cost, but it is still under study for now. Its high micronutrient content nevertheless makes it very effective as a dietary supplement.

  • In its natural state, spirulina grows in the brackish waters of tropical regions. The only problem: the lakes in these regions are too polluted to allow it to be harvested. This is how harvests at Lake Texcoco, in Mexico, had to stop following a significant accumulation of heavy metals. More recently, in 2012, spirulina from Lake Chenghai in China (30% of world production) was hit by a lead contamination scandal. Faced with this reality, we chose safety by opting for an artificial, protected environment: a farm far from any human pollution. Our spirulina is grown in France, by the Mediterranean, with 100% control over its inputs.

  • Thanks to its richness in micronutrients, spirulina is beneficial and can be taken every day for several months without problem.

  • Spirulina contains vitamin B12, but in two distinct forms: 17% methylcobalamin, an active form, and 83% adeninylcobamide (pseudovitamin B12), said to be inactive. Since 2009, though, several scientific studies have shown that adeninylcobamide is not as inactive as all that... In any case, the methylcobalamin content is more than sufficient for spirulina to play a role as a complementary source of vitamin B12.

  • Our French Organic Spirulina contains little iron and is not the best source for people with an iron deficiency. To "boost" spirulina with iron, it is currently necessary to load the culture medium with iron sulfate. The alga takes it up and the iron is retained, giving an iron-rich spirulina. However, this input is not authorized by the organic standard, which makes it impossible to combine French organic spirulina with a high iron content.

  • At the recommended doses, taking spirulina involves no danger. People on anticoagulants should not take spirulina, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should ask their doctor for advice before any supplementation.

  • Taking spirulina is generally a medium- and long-term supplementation, which becomes part of daily habits. A daily dose of 3 g, corresponding to 6 tablets per day, is recommended for most profiles.

  • Before 2017, there was no organic certification in Europe, and therefore in France. Many articles thus denounce the unscrupulous practices of certain brands that did not hesitate to use the AB label despite the law. But since 2017, organic spirulina has been officially covered by European organic farming regulations (now Regulation (EU) 2018/848). Certified farms can therefore claim use of the AB label and the European organic leaf.

  • You can of course buy our French Organic Spirulina at the best price directly from our website. You can also buy our spirulina dietary supplement in pharmacies at the same price (without a prescription) and in certain specialist stores.
